How to Reply to Notes on Instagram
Open your Instagram inbox, tap the Note you want to answer, type your message and send it. Your reply goes to the person's DMs. Below are the steps, answers to common questions and examples you can adapt to the Note.
Where your Instagram Note reply goes
- A reply to an inbox Note is sent as a direct message to the person who posted it. It is not a public comment beneath the Note.
- Other people who can see the Note do not see your DM reply there. The recipient can still share or screenshot a message, so avoid sending anything you would not want shared.
What 'replied to your note' and 'you replied to their note' mean
- 'Replied to your note' identifies a message responding to a Note you posted. Open the conversation to read the response.
- 'You replied to their note' identifies your outgoing response to someone else's Note. That wording alone does not mean they have read or answered it.
If you cannot find a Note or reply to it
- Check the Instagram mobile inbox for a currently visible Note. Notes are temporary and may have expired or been removed.
- The author chooses the Note's audience. Being on your own Close Friends list does not determine whether you can see someone else's Note.
- If the controls are missing, update and reopen the app. If the issue persists, use Instagram's in-app Help option to report it. A missing Note alone does not establish that someone blocked you.
Match your reply to what the Note actually says
- Song Note: 'Love this track. Have you heard the live version?' Ask only if you know the song.
- 'Coffee needed': 'Same here. What's your usual order?'
- 'I'm bored': 'Want a film recommendation or a ridiculous question?'
- A crush's weekend Note: 'That sounds fun. What are you planning?' Start with the topic before flirting.
- A sad Note: 'Thinking of you. Want to talk?' Offer support without demanding an explanation.
- If they answer, follow up on one detail. If they do not, give them space. A Note is not a promise to chat.

How do I reply to notes on IG?
Open the Instagram app's inbox, tap a visible Note, type your reply and send it. The reply goes to the author as a direct message.
Are Instagram Note replies public?
Replies to inbox Notes are DMs to the author, not public comments visible to everyone who sees the Note. The recipient can still share your message.
What does replied to your note mean?
It means the message is a response to a Note you posted. Open the conversation to read what the person sent.
Does you replied to their note mean they read it?
No. It identifies your response to their Note; it does not by itself confirm that they read it.
What should I reply to a crush's Instagram Note?
Mention its topic and ask a small question. For a music Note, try 'Love this song. What else is on your playlist?' Keep flirting light and appropriate to your existing relationship.
Why can't I see an Instagram Note anymore?
It may have expired or been removed, or you may not be in its audience. Check for a current Note in the app. A missing Note alone does not tell you whether you were blocked.
How long do Instagram Notes last?
Inbox Notes appear for up to 24 hours unless removed earlier. Reply while the Note is available.
